How to Access VA-Covered Mobility Equipment.

A step-by-step navigation guide for Veterans in the Midwest to get the mobility support they deserve.

VA Mobility Equipment

Navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to obtain mobility equipment like power wheelchairs or scooters can feel overwhelming. However, understanding the process is the first step toward regaining your independence. Shar's Medical Supplies is proud to serve Veterans across Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, helping them navigate these essential benefits.

Step 1: Enrollment in VA Health Care

To be eligible for mobility equipment, you must first be enrolled in the VA health care system. If you haven't yet, you can apply online at va.gov or visit your nearest VA medical center. Once enrolled, you'll have access to the full spectrum of VA benefits tailored to your needs.

Step 2: Request a Mobility Evaluation

The next critical step is scheduling an evaluation for mobility needs. You can request this through your VA primary care provider. Typically, a physical or occupational therapist will conduct a face-to-face assessment to determine if a power wheelchair or scooter is medically necessary for your daily life.

Step 3: Clinical Documentation & Approval

The evaluating therapist will document your specific clinical needs and create a treatment plan. This request is then sent to the Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service (PSAS) department at your local VA. They are responsible for approving and providing durable medical equipment (DME).

VSO Support & Guidance

If you encounter challenges, Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) like the DAV, VFW, or American Legion have trained service officers who can assist you at no cost. They are excellent advocates for ensuring your medical necessity is properly communicated and processed.

Remember, these benefits are not limited to service-connected disabilities. If you have a functional need, the VA is there to support your mobility and quality of life.
